Treating Adult Acne

Acne was once considered a problem that only affected adolescents.  The typical acne clients were mostly teenage boys as their hormones began to soar and their sebum production increased.  As a result, most of the traditional acne therapies were topically drying to the skin.  Well times have changed and there is NO typical acne patient and thankfully acne treatments have improved.

In my practice I have seen a rise of acne in mature female clients with Hormonal Acne, which is one of the most difficult forms to treat.  Because their Hormones fluctuate throughout their life, this rise and fall of estrogen leads to an imbalance of testosterone which is responsible for sebum production.  In addition, the drop in estrogen causes a decrease in surface lipids and other natural moisturizing components in the skin.  The dry surface layer combined with increased sebaceous activity is an ideal environment for blocked pores and the formation of breakouts.  Hormonal acne usually presents from below the nose to the chin and jaw line area of the face.  Pimples may appear as hard knots under the skin, hurt and usually don’t have a black or white head.  They seem to take forever to go away and when they do they often leave a dark spot.  Like your mother always told you “Don’t pick”.  Picking and squeezing may only make things worse by rupturing the follicle at the base and spreading the bacteria below the skin.

Many of the conventional acne control regimens are drying in nature and can exacerbate this lack of moisture.  It is for this reason that a customized regimen may be the best for mature clients with drier skin as well as breakouts.  I often recommend gentle washes, hydrating serums and retinols with a moisturizer appropriate for each client.  I have had great success in my practice with LED Blue Light Therapy.  It is lovingly referred to as “the magic pimple machine” by many of my clients.  For more information about LED Blue Light Therapy check out my website www.cara-linda.com and see special treatments.

I specialize in all types of acne and find there is no one solution for everyone.  I think the challenge presented may be one of the reason I like treating acne so much.  Of course, because I have successfully helped so many acne clients I also find it very rewarding to see their skin transformed and their self esteem improve.
