A PEEK INTO PEELS
Chemical peels have become increasingly popular over the past few years. Once a strictly medical procedure, peels entered the beauty industry as a way to rejuvenate aging skin, smooth lines, even out skin tone and fade dark spots, minimize enlarged pores, improve acne, and generally promote overall healthier skin.
SO WHAT IS IT?
Chemical peels involve applying one or more acids to facial skin to remove the outermost layer, called the epidermis. Technically speaking peels are a kind of resurfacing. Resurfacing is treating the skin so it will speed up the development of cells in the lower layers, and they will come to the surface younger and more healthy-looking.
To see amazing results, peels are best done in a series of 6-8 treatments followed by monthly maintenance. In general, peels involve the use of alpha hydroxyl acids, which are naturally occurring acids found in fruits and other foods. The most common are glycolic acid, derived from sugar cane, and lactic acid, which comes from sour milk. These acids have a long track record in treating dry skin, hyperpigmentation, and reversing the look of aging. Another frequently used substance, salicylic acid, derived from the bark of the willow tree, is an oil-grabber that helps unclog pores.
COMMON CONSIDERATIONS
A thorough evaluation must be done to evaluate skin type to ascertain which product will do the most good and to make sure there are no conditions that will make a chemical peel risky. The chief risk is post-peel hyperpigmentation, caused by exposure to the sun. For that reason I insist that clients wear sunscreen daily following a peel. Even if it’s cloudy outside, the sun can still get through to the skin and cause brown spots to develop and that’s usually what we’re trying to get rid of. You won’t get rid of all the discoloration or acne in one treatment, but you’ll definitely see a difference in your skin texture, and you’ll have a nice glow.
The best time to consider beginning a peel series is in the cool months prior to summer. They will help remove the dry winter skin and give your skin a fresh healthy appearance.
