TO “B” OR NOT TO “B”
Tips from Cara Linda
When it comes to facial wrinkles to Botox or not to Botox is not the question, but can be a question. Skin wrinkles typically appear as a result of aging processes, habitual facial expressions, sun damage, smoking, poor hydration and various other factors. Most of you have heard me say that my best anti-aging tips are to protect yourself from UV rays (using Vitamin C and SPF daily) and not to smoke. Non-invasive services like Microdermabrasion and Red LED can work wonders for wrinkles and I have some fabulous peels available for aging skin. That’s what I recommend and that’s what I do. I can’t say I always like my nasolabial folds, but I do laugh a lot and I guess my laugh lines echo the years of happiness I’ve enjoyed. If you’ve done all of the above and feel you still need further intervention to feel better about the way you look, then you should consider some of the injectable options out there. One option many of my clients ask me about is Botox; so I’m providing some information that may answer a few of your questions.
What is Botox?
Botox is the number one most-performed dermatologic procedure. It is Botulinum toxin type A strategically injected into the skin temporarily blocking the nerve impulses that trigger (wrinkle-causing) muscle contractions which cause furrows. It is FDA approved for wrinkles in frown lines and between the brows. Results become visible in three to seven days and last for three to four months.
Can Botox prevent wrinkles from forming?
Yes, small amounts of Botox can be used to help break unconscious wrinkle-forming habits such as frowning and squinting that lead to crow’s-feet.
What is the difference between Botox and fillers?
Botox stops the muscle contractions and fillers plump up the furrows.
How much does it cost?
The price varies from doctor to doctor and it may cost more in certain areas of town. Some doctors charge by the area (i.e. $425 for the forehead) and some doctor’s charge by the unit (i.e. $12 per unit). It usually takes 20-30 units for the forehead.
Who does Botox?
The procedure is done by plastic surgeons, dermatologists and ophthalmologists. It is even now being done in OB/GYN offices, dental offices, weight loss clinics, family practices many other places. It can be done by the M.D. or by his nurse, esthetician or any trained (I would hope) staff member.
Most Important!
Do your homework. Who do you trust to do injections in your face that will alter your appearance? Remember, cheaper is not always the best.
